Complexes
were established as a haven for escaping
the fever, fret and fury of life and
to make people healthy to live happily.
Kindred spirits gather to have fun,
make friends and take life as a treat.
The citizens of Chandigarh are a privileged
lot as they have a beautiful water
feature, Sukhna Lake, in the city.
Nestling in the foothills of Shivalik
range, this fascinating placid sheet
of water is perhaps the greatest gift
the founders of the, city beautiful,
could give to the people of Chandigarh.
An addition to this gift was made
when an idea of creating a Complex
(erstwhile Club) on the Sukhna Lake
was conceived by Mr. A.L. Fletcher
ICS, the then Financial Commissioner
Development, Punjab Government. Mr.
Le Corbusier was, however opposed
to the idea of construction of any
buildings on the northern bank as
he felt it would obstruct the view
of the Lake and hills beyond. However,
he relented and the Lake Sports Complex
building was so designed that it would
not be visible from the road. The
roof level of Complex building is
more or less at the road level. A
makeshift Complex, therefore, started
functioning in a tented accommodation
from where the Lake Cafeteria stands
today.
The Complex functioned under the aegis
of Punjab Sports Department till 1966.
Then Chandigarh acquired the status
of Union Territory. The Complex became
part of the Education Department,
UT, Chandigarh. The department of
Sports was incepted in 1984 and the
Complex was inherited by it. In the
year 1997 the management and administration
of the Complex was transferred to
the Chandigarh Sports Council. At
that time the Complex was offering
only sports facilities such as Rowing,
Canoeing & Kayaking, and Sailing
and its (erstwhile membership) Usership
was limited to 500. In the year 2000
the Complex management decided to
add new building and new (erstwhile
membership) Usership drive was initiated.
The Complex is gradually built modern
infrastructure and gradually started
providing following facilities to
its users and is considered as one
of the best Sports Complex in the
northern region of the country.
